Summary
Never Ending Spaces is Iole Alessandrini’s first laser installation using blue, Luminous Planes inside La Sala dei Paesaggi a frescoed room at Palazzo della Penna Museum in Perugia, Italy. “To migrate” says the artist “implies moving from one place to another. In this work, I invite people to move, body and mind, across intangible walls made of luminous planes”. Migrazione/Migration is an international exhibition curated by Antonio Carlo Ponti and organized by the Seattle Perugia Sister City Association together with Perugia Municipality–Culture Area. It showcases artworks by ten artists: five from Seattle (Iole Alessandrini, Humaira Abid, Mary Coss, Paul Goldstein, Malayka Gormally) and five from Perugia (Paolo Lattaioli, Sandford & Gosti, Tonina Cecchetti, Vilma Lok, Kim Hee Jin).
Project Description
During the exhibition at the Museum, Alessandrini wielded her camera to capture the enchanting spectacle of individuals traversing the luminous planes, which served as mystical gateways into Never Ending Spaces. As people journeyed through the Laser Plane, their images took on a two-dimensional quality, appearing flattened and/or countered against the Laser Plane. These extraordinary photographs are referred to by the artist as "Ioleograms."
The terms "Ioleogram" and "Ioleography" are ingeniously coined by Iole Alessandrini, blending her own name, "Iole," with "photograms" and "photography," encapsulating her distinct approach to creating Laser Plane photographs. Alessandrini, who invented Laser Plane photography, introduces a Laser Plane positioned between the subjects and the camera, capturing their movement as they gracefully passed through this ethereal plane.
Alessandrini says: "Ever since I was a child, I've been captivated by the mesmerizing sight of light filtering through dusty windows, creating a cascade of luminous planes as the tiny particles dance in excitement towards the sunlight. Inspired by this awe-inspiring phenomenon, I've collaborated with Ed Mannery, a skilled optical engineer, to develop a one-of-a-kind setup of lasers and optics. This innovative assembly allows me to create free-standing luminous planes that beautifully mimic the natural play of light and dust particles, reminiscent of the enchanting scene created by sunlight filtering through windows. Beyond fascination and owe, the Laser Planes have become a medium in my art that I explore with photography."
